  2. B. Fire, dismiss or expel someone

  4. D. DBeing fired or dismissed

炒鱿鱼 chǎo yóu yú

Firstly, let’s probe into the literal meaning. “炒chǎo”,which means stir-frying. “鱿鱼yóu yú”means sleeve-fish. As you see, it’s a dish name. By now you may have a question mark in your brain: how does this dish name matter with firing someone.

It derives from a previous parlance. In the old time of China, employers didn’t offer covering or mattress, so employees had to bring them by themselves. Once they were fired or expelled, they had to roll up their bedclothes. Because being dismissed or fired sounds sharp and acid, people are willing to use rolling up their bedclothes to imply that they are fired. Speaking of “炒鱿鱼 chǎo yóu yú”,if you observe carefully, you can find out every flat filet will gradually roll up into a cylinder. The process is like rolling up the bedclothes a lot, so people begin to use “炒鱿鱼 chǎo yóu yú” this phrase to refer to fire or expel someone.

Partial List of our Full Time Trainers:

Sandy Pan - Beijing Center's Teacher

Hi, I am Sandy, Center Manager and trainer in Dongguan. I come from Wuhan in Hubei province. I received my Bachelor degree in English education from Wuhan Education College. At first I was an English teacher and learned to love helping others communicate. I joined New Concept Mandarin more than 3 years ago and learned the NCM teaching methodology, which is a very enjoyable way to teach. It is also very rewarding as it helps our students learn fast. I am interested in Western culture which I learn a lot about from our students. I also enjoy sharing our great Chinese culture with them so they enjoy their days in China even more. I can help my students inside the classroom, but I also like to take them out and help them practice in the real world; learning by doing is our main philosophy. In my free time I like to go shopping, travelling and doing sports. Now as manager, however, my free time is not so much, but I enjoy the time together with our students so it is even more rewarding and fun.

Yolanda Li - Beijing Center's Teacher

Hi, I am Yolanda. I come from Nanyang, Henan province. I got my Bachelor’s Degree from SIAS University. My major is Business English. During my university, I established a Chinese Corner with my team and I was the leader. The Chinese Corner aims at helping the international students majored with Chinese know the Mandarin culture background so that they can learn Chinese quickly. We mainly gave presentations about classical music, paper-cutting, Chinese slangs and so on. That experience makes me find out my passion, which is spreading Chinese culture and making friends from abroad. Besides, I had also been a part-time mandarin tutor to one of my American friends. She spoke highly of my talent at this aspect, which makes me feel satisfied and confirm beginning my mandarin teaching career. New Concept Mandarin’s unique teaching methodology attracted me and it’s a place full of vitality. The most important point is that it’s like a big family and I do enjoy the teaching here. Please believe in me. You will get lots of fun studying Mandarin here. I am looking forward to meeting you here in Beijing.

Our Chinese students

Our Chinese students are from different professions, from Chinese Beginner to Professional Mandarin. See what they comment about our Chinese course, and we hope to see you here very soon.

  • The practical teaching method of New Concept Mandarin, where the student is encouraged to talk a lot, especially in the early phases, works really well in overcoming the initial barriers when trying to speak a new language. The teachers explained not only the grammar but also how the words were put together, which made them a lot easier to memorise. The classes were tailor made for my requirements and were always stimulating.

  • New Concept Mandarin (NCM) has been my language teacher of choice for just over one and a half years and though I am not the best or fastest learning student ever enrolled in the program I am probably one of the most pleased. During my enrollment I have been fortunate to have two very talented teachers who have had extreme patience, insight into Chinese culture and a talent for making Mandarin “come alive” during our classes.

NCM’s structured approach, utilizing well designed textbooks and other teaching materials has been very effective and made the transition from one teacher to the next very easy. For me personally, the teachers have made the learning opportunity enjoyable as each brought her unique personality and style to the classroom and shared with me in a relaxed environment I have found quite comfortable. Encouragement abounds, enthusiasm for teaching is evident in each class and a continual pursuit of “everyday life” application is prevalent. When student and teacher goals are aligned like ours seem to be the experience is enriched.

As an aside, I have particularly enjoyed the study of Chinese characters. When learning about the composition of each character and later practicing the strokes involved in writing I find real peace and tranquility in the midst of my life. Without the attention to detail from my teacher I would never have realized this benefit of my learning experience.

  • My language training at NCM has been a positively outstanding experience I would recommend to everyone. “Language Immersion” combined with one-on-one tutorials is probably the most effective way to learn Chinese, both for students at square one and for people wanting to improve their Chinese language skills and vocabulary. The NCM methodology is holistic in the sense that it focuses on developing speaking, listening, reading and writing skills at the same time. Moreover, the teaching materials and techniques are both effective and pleasant, since they give students the flexibility to adapt classes to their learning speed and skills as well as professional needs. While continually challenged, I never felt completely lost from the material, and I believe that this allowed me to gain the maximum possible benefit from the training. Combined with the personal attention of the instructors, this approach makes it possible for the student to learn a great deal in a short time. As to the instructors, I found them to be uniformly excellent. The talent, patience and good humour of all of the instructors was a real boost to me. One of my teachers one day told me that NCM was like a big family and she couldn’t be more right – it’s amazing because when you arrive in a foreign country you value much more the affection. The big family concept also allows you to follow intensive courses at NCM branches other than where you are normally based. You then get the pleasant experience of showing-up Monday morning in a different city meeting new teachers who nonetheless already know who you are, how much Chinese you speak, your strengths and weaknesses, and how you prefer to be taught. Impressive!
