Dragon Boat Festival

Chinese Dragon Boat Festival, 端午节duān wǔ jié, in Mandarin, takes place in May 5 in the lunar calendar. It is a folk festival widely passed down with a history of over two thousand years. There are various celebrating activities on the day of Dragon Boat Festival, among which eating rice dumplings, in Chinese粽子zòng zi, the steamed rice wrapped in bamboo leaves, and dragon boat race are the most popular ones.

There are many legends on the origin of the Dragon Boat Festival. One of them is to commemorate the poet Qu Yuan. People praise highly the lofty sentiment and outstanding talent toward this patriotic poet and take more pity on the finale that he drowned himself in a river. In the mind of Chinese people, the conventions of eating rice dumplings and Dragon Boat Race in the Festival are commemoration of Qu Yuan.

  • I had my first Chinese classes in Germany right before I came to China for a 3 year work assignment. After completing this first approach towards Mandarin, I realized that this was just a thing to say “I prepared for China”. Arriving here in Nanjing, it was obvious that learning Mandarin would increase the comfort factor substantially. Luckily, there is a New Concept Mandarin language school. It is just great fun to work with the NCM staff, because they are passionate about their work and about teaching foreigners. My Chinese lessons are no longer mere language classes, but also help me to better understand Chinese customs and culture. My teacher is very good at giving background information on upcoming Chinese festivals, such as Chinese teacher’s day and Chinese Valentine’s day. She also enriches classes with simple stories of Chinese tradition and a lot of pictures, so that I can remember new vocabulary even at 7:30 in the morning.

  • "I'm learning Chinese now with New Concept Mandarin for roughly one year. A colleague had recommended NCM to me, mentioning that she would have seen fast success with moderate efforts to learn. Even if it seems me to take some more exertion to become familiar with Chinese language, I fully agree with her and therefore also recommend this learning approach to others.

    What I like best:

    1. The concept: NCM strictly focus on using and speaking Chinese from the very beginning on. Therefore it does not stress too much grammar or language specifics. Such will be introduced smoothly during the different lessons. The training content seems carefully selected to fit common day's needs, like booking hotels or trains, ordering dishes, making appointments etc. NCM calls this "survival" content and is absolutely right by doing so. From the beginning on, the Chinese world opens case by case, word by word and therefore offers a lot of chances for self motivation to learn more. This concept seems to be very reasonable to me and furthermore highly supports my learning behavior.

    2. The teachers: They all not only seem to really like their job but also are very professional and highly attentive. They encourage their students to speak as much as possible all the time. After having passed the first 3 survival levels, I will more or less solely speak in Chinese with my teacher Janey. Of course, sometimes, for very difficult sentence structures or new words, we will communicate in English (and btw. I really would be glad, if I could speak English as fluent as she does). She really encourage me, even if sometimes suddenly for some reason all my Chinese seems to have been disappeared. With patience, humor and precise knowledge about my knowledge, she will try to understand my ways to remember words, e.g. by offering mnemonics or basic explanations which will help me to access the words.

Of course I will continue to learn with NCM. Currently I'm looking forward to enter the "social" levels. And I will feel encouraged when my teacher says to me: 加油!"

  • "I just completed four weeks of intensive study at New Concept Mandarin (NCM) in their Nanjing Learning Center. I could not be happier. I had studied the language in the U.S. for a couple of years, adult education, one day a week at the local Chinese Cultural Center. Since that study focused primarily on reading/writing, much-needed verbal skills were lacking, I requested NCM target that important area. After my four weeks I feel much more capable.

I chose NCM because they are routinely selected by international companies and foreign governments to provide training to their employees assigned to work in China, or conduct business with Chinese counterparts. From my own experience, I know this is the hallmark of a successful language school, and NCM certainly deserves their business. In fact, I met one of NCM’s recent local graduates, a German wife whose husband works for a leading German company in Nanjing and is a continuing part-time NCM student. Her own Chinese skills are commendable. She too praised the school, and returns occasionally to chat with the amicable Nanjing NCM staff.

NCM Nanjing’s group of talented, young teachers is superlative, as they teach real-world interactions within Chinese society. For example, one teacher discussed her own two exciting weekend activities – one, visiting her parents in her own hometown and attending a wedding; the other, journeying to a nearby municipality with friends to attend yet another Chinese wedding. On other occasions, I was treated to detailed descriptions of Chinese houses, real-estate, and very importantly…taught Chinese humorous sayings and even some jokes! These insights into Chinese society can be invaluable for achieving rapport with Chinese counterparts.

In short, I can unequivocally recommend New Concept Mandarin!"
