Our clients say :

  • "I have hugely enjoyed learning Mandarin at NCM. The language itself is fascinating, as it is so vastly different to English and learning the characters is like unlocking a puzzle, but the real joy has been my teacher, she has done an excellent job at keeping the sessions fun and interesting, varied and not regimented, but still thorough in teaching style and constantly adapted to my learning needs over time. I have made great progress, thanks to a fun but very professional teacher."

  • My experience of New Concept Mandarin language teaching is two-fold: a ten-day one-to-one immersion course in Shekou and several series of one-to-one tutorials in Hong Kong (in that order). In both cases the teaching was individually designed to meet my learning requirements and the teachers at both locations demonstrated a high level of understanding and commitment on the one hand together with creativity and flexibility on the other. The immersion approach, albeit gruelling on a one-to-one basis, is an excellent way for the learner to break down the barrier that Mandarin seems to present in the early stages and to gain the confidence needed to see the battle through. I doubt whether I would have continued to study Mandarin without that experience behind me. One-to-one tutorials are, in my opinion, the best way to progress once the basis has been laid. They are demanding of both teacher and student and it was the calibre of the teaching staff I encountered at NCM in Hong Kong that made them successful and encouraged me to keep going back for more.

There was plenty of hard work involved, but an outstanding feature of all the lessons I had at NCM is that they were always lively and stimulating. The teachers not only displayed a highly professional approach to teaching Mandarin, but it was also fun to spend time with them and to be so easily and warmly accepted into their close-knit and friendly community.

  • As a result I have attended many different Mandarin schools so can vouch for New Concept Mandarin's superior standards! Upon arrival at their training centre I was given an assessment and was impressed that the teacher really took the time to discover what would be the best level for me. At first I wanted to take a group class but after 1 lesson with my new teacher, I realised their one-on-one technique is amazing. My teacher promised I would learn Mandarin faster and more efficiently with their techniques and it was true!

Through my music I have found that learning Mandarin songs is one of the best ways to improve tones and pronunciation. I have to focus on each word to make sure it is accurate before I can sing the song and this has made my spoken Mandarin much sharper too. I would recommend you to learn a Mandarin song with your teacher! Not only will your language skills improve, you will also gain a deeper appreciation of Chinese culture.

  • " I had previously taken one Mandarin course in the US, but from my point of view, the teaching method was so bad that I hardly learned anything and it made me think that Mandarin was an impossible language to learn. After our "Survival Course' at NCM I feel encouraged to keep with the challenge: now I feel I can learn Chinese! My teacher has been extraordinary and it's a pity we have to leave Hong Kong and interrupt the course. Why don't you open a language school in Boston and New York? Thanks for everything. Xie Xie. "

  • " I really enjoyed studying Mandarin at NCM. Starting slowly by learning the numbers was great. It took some time to remember the different sounds, but after countless repetitions I left the class feeling I had really learnt something. Soon afterwards, at the Hong Kong airport, I was really excited about understanding the flight number announcements in Mandarin. Although I was initially suspicious of the value of studying characters, I changed my mind. It is really helpful. It is great to recognize some characters in everyday life, for example on street signs, shops, grocery products and so on. Also, somehow it is easier to associate the correct pronunciation with a character than with a pinyin word. Although I have spent only three months in Hong Kong, I always wanted to get at least some Chinese lessons.

Language is a very important part of what we are, how we behave and how we think. To understand people better, to feel "part of it", I want to get a start with the language. Of course, in Hong Kong, Cantonese would be even better, but more generally, I thought Mandarin would perhaps make more sense.

Our teacher was great. She taught us that it is possible - and a lot of fun - to start speaking, writing and understanding Mandarin in a fairly short time. She really made me love Mandarin and wanting to continue learning it. I already signed up for a follow up course in the US. Unfortunately not with NCM, as you don't have an office in Boston. I hope to be back in Hong Kong before long and continue my studies at NCM. Thank you! "

  • " I am very pleased to have found New Concept Mandarin. I have been studying with them for just over 1 year using mostly the written and audio, and one-to-one classes. Iˇm very impressed with the quality of the materials and the teaching. And the flexibility to arrange classes to suit my schedule was a great help. I now must return to UK, and I will miss my classes and teacher at NCM. "

  • " NCM is a fun way to learn that rather intimidating language because you get to talk from the very beginning. My teacher was great and besides Mandarin I learned quite a bit about Chinese traditions and culture. "

  • " My learning experience is simply great. Although I had to change a teacher in the middle of the course, which normally can be stressful and needs time to adapt, it was beneficial for me. I had an opportunity to meet two great teachers with two different working styles but with the same very high level in standard of teaching.

My teachers have taught me loads about not only Mandarin as a language but also about the Chinese culture, customs and even songs for children. I am very grateful for that. Many thanks! "

  • " The structure of the lessons and books quickly cover the basic social vocabulary needed to ineract with others. My application was dealt with quickly and efficciently. The pace at which the course is taught is spot-on, whilst giving teachers some flexibility in adjusting them to individual student's needs. I had an excellent teacher, who was very enthusiastic and encouraging, making learning fun. "

  • " I cannot begin to tell you how much our three kids enjoyed their day today. My husband and I were concerned that perhaps the kids would lapse into speaking English because of all the excitement around them at Disney or that the day would not work out as expected, but I want you to know that it appears to have been 100% successful! I believe a lot of it has to do with your excellent planning, but a lot of it has to do with your teacher - she is so delightful for our kids-they really like her a lot and she is dedicated to help them accomplish their goal which is to develop a fluency in Mandarin-a language they truly love learning. • " I was thoroughly impressed by the lessons I received from New Concept Mandarin. As a participant in NCM's Survival I course, my classmates and I were able to develop a foundational understanding of the language's key syntax and basic vocabulary.

Most impressive, however, was the extent to which we could control the flow of the course. Our instructor, Yvonne, was very comfortable with our "Western" learning styles and throughout the duration of the course, created lesson plans that were relevant to our interests and needs. New Concept Mandarin seems to provide high-level language instruction that creates results which justify the cost. "
