" I just completed four weeks of intensive study at New Concept Mandarin (NCM) in their Nanjing Learning Center. I could not be happier. I had studied the language in the U.S. for a couple of years, adult education, one day a week at the local Chinese Cultural Center. Since that study focused primarily on reading/writing, much-needed verbal skills were lacking, I requested NCM target that important area. After my four weeks I feel much more capable.

I chose NCM because they are routinely selected by international companies and foreign governments to provide training to their employees assigned to work in China, or conduct business with Chinese counterparts. From my own experience, I know this is the hallmark of a successful language school, and NCM certainly deserves their business. In fact, I met one of NCM’s recent local graduates, a German wife whose husband works for a leading German company in Nanjing and is a continuing part-time NCM student. Her own Chinese skills are commendable. She too praised the school, and returns occasionally to chat with the amicable Nanjing NCM staff.

NCM Nanjing’s group of talented, young teachers is superlative, as they teach real-world interactions within Chinese society. For example, one teacher discussed her own two exciting weekend activities – one, visiting her parents in her own hometown and attending a wedding; the other, journeying to a nearby municipality with friends to attend yet another Chinese wedding. On other occasions, I was treated to detailed descriptions of Chinese houses, real-estate, and very importantly…taught Chinese humorous sayings and even some jokes! These insights into Chinese society can be invaluable for achieving rapport with Chinese counterparts.

In short, I can unequivocally recommend New Concept Mandarin!

" During my internship in Singapore I had the chance to start learning Mandarin at NCM and enjoyed it very much.
I think it’s always a good way of learning a new language when it takes place in a small group like our group of only 7 people, because then the teacher can structure the classes better according to the individuals needs.
The repetition exercises in every lesson were very beneficial.
With these exercises we could repeat the last lesson and keep the words and expressions in mind easier.
I believe that it is also very important that the clients talk and practice a lot in class and we always held a lot of conversations and read texts out loud.

How did I do?

" What I have to say about NCM first of all is that the course is effective. I had never learned so much of a language in such a short time - especially such a different language from my own. After just the first module (Survival 1) I was already getting more used to the Chinese language tones and I was able to understand Chinese better. After Survival 2 I could already have some conversation as well as do many useful things in Chinese like booking a ticket or a hotel. The course is very down to earth and does help with daily language use. And the interesting thing is that we learn without noticing, without much effort. One day you don't know much and when you realize you are already speaking Mandarin. It is so great! I mean, so many people say that learning Mandarin is so difficult! I don't think so! At NCM it feels easy.

My husband is even happier than I am that I am learning so much and I can already tell the drivers where to go, or ask information about a place, or talk on the phone to Chinese people because he gets off having to go through that kind of ordeal!! Now whenever he needs to communicate in Chinese, he calls his translator: me!

The material used at NCM is pleasant and focused on what really matters. The lessons are very clear and well distributed.

My teacher is really good. She is an experienced teacher and she knows how to conduct the class in a natural pace. She explains all the subjects very clearly and provides many different exercises that make the class interesting. She also encourages enough practice in class so that to make sure we do learn and understand everything . I also enjoy the often exchange of cultural issues in class. Learning a country's culture is very important to understand its language.

As a bonus, my teacher is a very pleasant and helpful person, as well as all the staff at NCM.
