"I'm learning Chinese now with New Concept Mandarin for roughly one year. A colleague had recommended NCM to me, mentioning that she would have seen fast success with moderate efforts to learn. Even if it seems me to take some more exertion to become familiar with Chinese language, I fully agree with her and therefore also recommend this learning approach to others.

What I like best:

1. The concept: NCM strictly focus on using and speaking Chinese from the very beginning on. Therefore it does not stress too much grammar or language specifics. Such will be introduced smoothly during the different lessons. The training content seems carefully selected to fit common day's needs, like booking hotels or trains, ordering dishes, making appointments etc. NCM calls this "survival" content and is absolutely right by doing so. From the beginning on, the Chinese world opens case by case, word by word and therefore offers a lot of chances for self motivation to learn more. This concept seems to be very reasonable to me and furthermore highly supports my learning behavior.

2. The teachers: They all not only seem to really like their job but also are very professional and highly attentive. They encourage their students to speak as much as possible all the time. After having passed the first 3 survival levels, I will more or less solely speak in Chinese with my teacher Janey. Of course, sometimes, for very difficult sentence structures or new words, we will communicate in English (and btw. I really would be glad, if I could speak English as fluent as she does). She really encourage me, even if sometimes suddenly for some reason all my Chinese seems to have been disappeared. With patience, humor and precise knowledge about my knowledge, she will try to understand my ways to remember words, e.g. by offering mnemonics or basic explanations which will help me to access the words.

Of course I will continue to learn with NCM. Currently I'm looking forward to enter the "social" levels. And I will feel encouraged when my teacher says to me: 加油！"

Teacher is always very open for answering questions.

My first instructor was energetic, clever, humorous and well educated. I appreciated her focus on pronunciation and her ability to explain proper use of words. My second instructor used her real-world experience in training to help me better understand how to speak and use formal pronunciation. Her ability to provide me examples through her experience help me relate to each learning session. The entire staff in NCM was helpful and caring which makes for a great learning experience. I would strongly recommend NCM to anyone interested in learning or advancing their Chinese languages or writing skills. In particular I had a great experience with the instructors. I also appreciate the support of NCM teams. I only wish I could have continued my experience much longer.

After few hours, I feel comfortable to exchange a few word with Chinese people and I can also sometime catch a few word in a discussion or understand the subject. So even If we are far away to be fluent in mandarin, it's definitely a great improvement for me and my wife.

Be capable to exchange at least few world and hopefully more in future with local people is for us the key of success for our integration in China. And we are fully satisfied by the courses provide by you and your colleagues.

I highly recommend New Concept Mandarin as a great candidate for a language school. I studied Mandarin for two months and loved every minute of it. The Chinese lessons are very helpful in daily life , without a basic understanding simple things can become very difficult. Its still the case that the majority of the Chinese people do not speak a single word of English.

Survival level 1 brings everything you need to overcome the basic questions about time , shopping , money , and other conversations.

I believe the content of this first level has been chosen very well.

Our teacher Manli is very professional and has lots of experience , the lessons are very well prepared and have a clear goal. For students from our class I believe this is very important , we are all fulltime employed and have already a busy daytask , well structured , ontime classes are therefore required.

The practical teaching method of New Concept Mandarin, where the student is encouraged to talk a lot, especially in the early phases, works really well in overcoming the initial barriers when trying to speak a new language. The teachers explained not only the grammar but also how the words were put together, which made them a lot easier to memorise. The classes were tailor made for my requirements and were always stimulating.

I have been learning Chinese with Julia for about a year at New Concept Mandarin (Shekou,Shenzhen); reading, making exercises and writing allow me to learn more and faster than before. The method is very intuitive, efficient and appropriate.

I really enjoyed my lessons. Even if I did not always well reviewed previous lessons or changed the schedule at the last minute, Julia is flexible, patient, takes the right time, adapt her lesson to the right pace, repeat with different words to make me understand (instead of immediately translating to English.) and always with a smile. Well prepared courses, a glitch of humor and some hints on Chinese Culture, Chinese historical facts... All this make Julia's course an interesting, motivating and pleasant time.

New Concept Mandarin (NCM) has been my language teacher of choice for just over one and a half years and though I am not the best or fastest learning student ever enrolled in the program I am probably one of the most pleased. During my enrollment I have been fortunate to have two very talented teachers who have had extreme patience, insight into Chinese culture and a talent for making Mandarin “come alive” during our classes.

NCM’s structured approach, utilizing well designed textbooks and other teaching materials has been very effective and made the transition from one teacher to the next very easy. For me personally, the teachers have made the learning opportunity enjoyable as each brought her unique personality and style to the classroom and shared with me in a relaxed environment I have found quite comfortable. Encouragement abounds, enthusiasm for teaching is evident in each class and a continual pursuit of “everyday life” application is prevalent. When student and teacher goals are aligned like ours seem to be the experience is enriched.

As an aside, I have particularly enjoyed the study of Chinese characters. When learning about the composition of each character and later practicing the strokes involved in writing I find real peace and tranquility in the midst of my life. Without the attention to detail from my teacher I would never have realized this benefit of my learning experience.

The learning method of New Concept Mandarin is very practical. After Survival Level 1 we are already able to have basic communication in practical situations. Our teacher Jean is very fun to be with and we enjoy the classes very much.

We recommend this course to all other expatriates in Singapore to learn Mandarin in an effective and pleasant way.

My experience of New Concept Mandarin language teaching is two-fold: a ten-day one-to-one immersion course in Shekou and several series of one-to-one tutorials in Hong Kong (in that order). In both cases the teaching was individually designed to meet my learning requirements and the teachers at both locations demonstrated a high level of understanding and commitment on the one hand together with creativity and flexibility on the other. The immersion approach, albeit gruelling on a one-to-one basis, is an excellent way for the learner to break down the barrier that Mandarin seems to present in the early stages and to gain the confidence needed to see the battle through. I doubt whether I would have continued to study Mandarin without that experience behind me. One-to-one tutorials are, in my opinion, the best way to progress once the basis has been laid. They are demanding of both teacher and student and it was the calibre of the teaching staff I encountered at NCM in Hong Kong that made them successful and encouraged me to keep going back for more.

There was plenty of hard work involved, but an outstanding feature of all the lessons I had at NCM is that they were always lively and stimulating. The teachers not only displayed a highly professional approach to teaching Mandarin, but it was also fun to spend time with them and to be so easily and warmly accepted into their close-knit and friendly community.

As a result I have attended many different Mandarin schools so can vouch for New Concept Mandarin's superior standards! Upon arrival at their training centre I was given an assessment and was impressed that the teacher really took the time to discover what would be the best level for me. At first I wanted to take a group class but after 1 lesson with my new teacher, I realised their one-on-one technique is amazing. My teacher promised I would learn Mandarin faster and more efficiently with their techniques and it was true!

Through my music I have found that learning Mandarin songs is one of the best ways to improve tones and pronunciation. I have to focus on each word to make sure it is accurate before I can sing the song and this has made my spoken Mandarin much sharper too. I would recommend you to learn a Mandarin song with your teacher! Not only will your language skills improve, you will also gain a deeper appreciation of Chinese culture.

I started Mandarin 1 year and a half ago not knowing where I was embarking for, but conscious that it would demand a serious effort. I found within New Concept Mandarin a very supportive environment, and, thanks to their teaching, a continuous motive of interest in learning not only mandarin but also the whole chinese culture filtering from every words and characters. The pedagogy is subtle, the progression makes you feel you are really making progress. I particularly enjoyed the always cheerful and so smart way our Lao Shi, Mina, enlivens the language and organize our weekly games with new words and sentences.

The Business Mandarin (Advance) offered by New Concept Mandarin appealed to me because it offered flexibility that allowed me to tailor the course to suit my specific learning needs. My tuitor Ms Zheng was not only effectively bilingual in English and Chinese, she was also very patient in accommodating my very tight work schedule, allowing me to complete the entire course in a short span of 2 months, just in time for me to leave on my work stint in China.

I am very satisfied with the ongoing courses.

The strong points of this teaching system are the good materials that are provided, these are adapted to foreigners trying to understand and learn a very alien language, and the personalized teaching one-on-one. This helps a lot.

My trainer, Mina Zheng min, individual strong attributes are: very punctual service, good knowledge of Chinese language and culture (it is important that we learn more also about the culture, so this is very helpful), personalised attention. She answered all questions very appropriately, good context placement of what we learn, her flexibility in scheduling classes, a good sense of humor to make it lighter. Her recommendable patience to teach wiaguoren like myself who seem to learn with great difficulty.

My language training at NCM has been a positively outstanding experience I would recommend to everyone. “Language Immersion” combined with one-on-one tutorials is probably the most effective way to learn Chinese, both for students at square one and for people wanting to improve their Chinese language skills and vocabulary. The NCM methodology is holistic in the sense that it focuses on developing speaking, listening, reading and writing skills at the same time. Moreover, the teaching materials and techniques are both effective and pleasant, since they give students the flexibility to adapt classes to their learning speed and skills as well as professional needs. While continually challenged, I never felt completely lost from the material, and I believe that this allowed me to gain the maximum possible benefit from the training. Combined with the personal attention of the instructors, this approach makes it possible for the student to learn a great deal in a short time. As to the instructors, I found them to be uniformly excellent. The talent, patience and good humour of all of the instructors was a real boost to me. One of my teachers one day told me that NCM was like a big family and she couldn’t be more right – it’s amazing because when you arrive in a foreign country you value much more the affection. The big family concept also allows you to follow intensive courses at NCM branches other than where you are normally based. You then get the pleasant experience of showing-up Monday morning in a different city meeting new teachers who nonetheless already know who you are, how much Chinese you speak, your strengths and weaknesses, and how you prefer to be taught. Impressive!

New Concept Mandarin (NCM) has really enriched my life in Dongguan both professionally and personally. Working as head of Human Resources and Administration at a large production facility, it is a great help being able to discuss issues directly with our factory employees. After a little more than one year of studying Mandarin two times a week I have reached a level that allows me to do so.

When selecting the right vendor to provide Mandarin, the most important criterion for me was "value for money". Despite the fact that our comparisons showed me a unit price for lessons a little higher at NCM than other vendors, I believe that NCM Chinese courses are worth-the-money and the most efficient solution. Better teachers and better teaching methods mean faster progress and therefore savings on lessons in the long run. In a hectic everyday flexibility can be required and therefore flexibility were the second most important criterion for me.

"I just completed four weeks of intensive study at New Concept Mandarin (NCM) in their Nanjing Learning Center. I could not be happier. I had studied the language in the U.S. for a couple of years, adult education, one day a week at the local Chinese Cultural Center. " What I have to say about NCM first of all is that the course is effective. I had never learned so much of a language in such a short time - especially such a different language from my own. After just the first module (Survival 1) I was already getting more used to the Chinese language tones and I was able to understand Chinese better. " I had previously studied Mandarin in France for a few years while working and I decided to continue on the same pace here in Guangzhou, i.e. 3 hours a week, but NCM's material is a lot more practical and fun. " I really enjoyed studying Mandarin at NCM. Starting slowly by learning the numbers was great. It took some time to remember the different sounds, but after countless repetitions I left the class feeling I had really learnt something. Soon afterwards, at the Hong Kong airport, I was really excited about understanding the flight number announcements in Mandarin. Although I was initially suspicious of the value of studying characters, I changed my mind. It is really helpful. It is great to recognize some characters in everyday life, for example on street signs, shops, grocery products and so on. Also, somehow it is easier to associate the correct pronunciation with a character than with a pinyin word. Although I have spent only three months in Hong Kong, I always wanted to get at least some Chinese lessons.

Language is a very important part of what we are, how we behave and how we think. To understand people better, to feel "part of it", I want to get a start with the language. Of course, in Hong Kong, Cantonese would be even better, but more generally, I thought Mandarin would perhaps make more sense.

Our teacher was great. She taught us that it is possible - and a lot of fun - to start speaking, writing and understanding Mandarin in a fairly short time. She really made me love Mandarin and wanting to continue learning it. I already signed up for a follow up course in the US. Unfortunately not with NCM, as you don't have an office in Boston. I hope to be back in Hong Kong before long and continue my studies at NCM. Thank you! "

" Through a contact in China I got aware of New Concept Mandarin and their programs. I took the decision to study with the online courses, as well as the possibility of having individual lessons through Skype with my teacher while my teacher is in China and I am in Germany.

Through Pinyin, the Romanization of Chinese characters, this language looks more simple and easier to me. Studying with the Online Chinese Tutoring program, learning characters is not a must as I can alway refer to the pinyin next to the characters.

The Online Chinese Tutorial and its courseware are very well-structured. It starts with numbers and short sayings (such as ask for prices, phone numbers, birth dates). Gradually including more wordings for daily conversations, such as topics like prices, greetings, politeness or introductions.

The teachers are very polite, punctual and quite flexible when it comes to the agreement on dates.
